Next Rehearsal – 08/27/24

Our next meeting is next Tuesday!

I anticipate working on "Harvest Chant" some more, hopefully incorporating the listening exercises that were so effective in our last rehearsal. If you'd like to be an overachiever and come prepared, sheet music and recordings for most pieces are available on our Drive.

We welcome all safe and respectful Pagan and Pagan-adjacent adults of any skill and experience level! We're community-focused rather than performance-focused, so we don't hold auditions and we welcome drop-ins. Because of the music that is best-known and most-available, our starter songs trend a little Wiccan, but we will be seeking to incorporate all kinds of Pagan and Pagan-friendly music. You can help! We welcome recommendations and leads on pertinent music that is in the public domain or is low-royalty. 

There are no fees or dues for participating, but we do gratefully welcome any cash donations* to cover the cost of renting our rehearsal space. We will have a receipt book on hand to log all donations and post aggregate info (without personally identifying information) to the blog so everyone can see where their donations are going. *We are not currently a registered 501c, so we don't have financial accounts and I can't speak to whether or not your donation is tax-deductible.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of a contagious illness, especially Covid-19, please defer your attendance until you're feeling well. We'll all be breathing the same air in that meeting room and, while you are absolutely welcome to wear a mask, it isn't exactly conducive to singing.

We will have name/pronoun stickers, sheet music, and folders available at our meetings. The sheet music is also available on our Drive. The only things you need to bring are your voice and the vocal-chord-friendly drink of your choice!

The UU campus has multiple lots, buildings, and doors, so we have a video demonstrating how to get to our rehearsal space from either lot. (Apologies for my winded smoker wheezing!)

We can't wait to sing with y'all on Tuesday!

Rehearsal Summary - 08/20/24

We had a really fantastic rehearsal this week! I was pleased to meet our new member this week and hope they'll continue joining us! Emori lead the other four of us in breathing exercises and warmups before we launched into "Full Moonlight Dance", since it was the day after the full moon. They had us do some really challenging exercises, repeatedly singing the song aggressively staccato and then repeatedly singing it like we'd been novocained at the dentist. Having sung those two extremes was really helpful for finding the right balance between diction and fluidity; I think it really helped polish our performance! After that, Emori had us do listening exercises, focusing not just on our own singing but really hearing the rest of the group and matching each other. They had us visualize our collected efforts as connecting strands of energy. Then they had one of us at a time walk in circles around the other three, making observations and sharing them afterwards. These exercises were truly effective! You can hear in the recordings (the first recording of us singing as softly as possible, the second of us finding our volume in the moment by listening to each other) that we truly sound like a unified choir, rather than just a collection of people. Honestly, it was a moving experience and the exact feeling that I value so much about singing in a choir. I really look forward to bringing this into to future rehearsals!

We finally figured out how to upload the "Harvest Chant" recording from last week. If you're only listening to learn the song, skip ahead to 1:15 where the first run-through, the piano example, and the second run-through are. Otherwise, enjoy the silliness and chatter they also recorded!

If you're trying to practice at home and can't quite discern your note, you can use a keyboard app to plunk out whichever ones you're having trouble with.  (This is by no means an official endorsement, but the app I use is "Voice Training - Learn to Sing" by the developer Learn to Master. It labels the notes on the keyboard and gives you real-time feedback on what note you're singing.) If you need a tutorial on how to read music, this one seems sufficient for helping you figure out which note you want to find on the keyboard.

Rehearsal Summary - 08/13/24

I wasn't able to attend this week due to parenting things (also why this update is so late), but I received a recording, from one of the five members who was present, of them singing the Mabon Chant a few times. It's a short piece but a lovely tribute to turning one's hands to good works. Unfortunately, I can't upload the file type they sent me but we'll see if we can find a work-around. We had a new person this week! I'm sorry to have missed them but look forward to seeing them at future rehearsals!

One of our members has been teaching us Lakota songs recently, so that's a possible item on the agenda. Alternatively, it's not too early to start learning the Mabon piece! We've been making progress on "Dark of the Moon" and "Lammas Gift" so both of those are strong contenders for rehearsal. Unfortunately, I'm recovering from Covid (which is why this update is so late), so I won't be able to attend. Rehearsal Summary - 07/29/24

Only three of us could make it this week but we made solid progress on "Lammas Gift". Last week we learned the melody and the first verse. This week we successfully learned to apply the melody to the rest of the verses. We made a recording with just a couple minor errors. We still need some polishing, but I feel good about our progress!

P.S. I'm sorry I'm so late with updates. I've been laid low with Covid while my brother was in town visiting for Lughnasadh and could only do the bare minimum. I don't appear to have transmitted it at rehearsal but I'll be sitting out the 8/6 rehearsal while I recover.
