Next Rehearsal – 03/04/25

Our next meeting is next Tuesday!

It seems probable that we'll work on the Equinox Chant, since that's the next Sabbat, though I would also love to work together to craft an alternative Ostara song that feels more cheerful. It will be a waxing crescent moon but we could revisit "Dark of the Moon" anyway if we have interest. We haven't worked on "Crescent Moon" in almost a year, so maybe we could take another crack at that. It also seems like a good time to start learning some of the justice-oriented pieces from Reclaiming. If you'd like to be an overachiever and come prepared, sheet music and recordings for most pieces are available on our Drive. 

We welcome all safe and respectful Pagan and Pagan-adjacent adults of any skill and experience level! We're community-focused rather than performance-focused, so we don't hold auditions and we welcome drop-ins. Because of the music that is best-known and most-available, our starter songs trend a little Wiccan, but we will be seeking to incorporate all kinds of Pagan and Pagan-friendly music. You can help! We welcome recommendations and leads on pertinent music that is in the public domain or is low-royalty. 

There are no fees or dues for participating, but we do gratefully welcome any cash donations* to cover the cost of renting our rehearsal space. We will have a receipt book on hand to log all donations and post aggregate info (without personally identifying information) to the blog so everyone can see where their donations are going. *We are not currently a registered 501c, so we don't have financial accounts and I can't speak to whether or not your donation is tax-deductible.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of a contagious illness, especially Covid-19, please defer your attendance until you're feeling well. We'll all be breathing the same air in that meeting room and, while you are absolutely welcome to wear a mask, it isn't exactly conducive to singing.

We will have name/pronoun stickers, sheet music, and folders available at our meetings. The sheet music is also available on our Drive. The only things you need to bring are your voice and the vocal-chord-friendly drink of your choice!

The UU campus has multiple lots, buildings, and doors, so we have a video demonstrating how to get to our rehearsal space from either lot. (Apologies for my winded smoker wheezing!)

Rehearsal Summary - 02/25/25

Three of us made it out this week. After a quick warm-up, we dug into "Dark of the Moon", since three is the perfect number for that piece and we're moving into that moon phase. First, since at least one of us hadn't had much rehearsal time with that piece, we went through each of the three melodies a few times until we all felt pretty good about all of them. Then, I played the Libana recording so our person who had never sung it in the round before could hear how all three melodies fit together. Then we divvied them up and gave it a whirl. It's a really challenging piece but they took to it right away! By our third time through, our folks on Melody 2 and Melody 3 were locked in perfectly. For the first time, I finally felt like I got the rhythm of Melody 1 correct in relation to the other two parts. Unfortunately, I was so focused on the rhythm, I hit a bunch of sour notes. But that's still progress, so I'll take it! We talked about how to adjust to improve next time and I'm really looking forward to giving it another go!

You can also listen to the TPC playlist of recordings of some of the pieces by professional artists on Spotify. If you're trying to practice at home and can't quite discern your note, you can use a keyboard app to plunk out whichever ones you're having trouble with.  (This is by no means an official endorsement, but the app I use is "Voice Training - Learn to Sing" by the developer Learn to Master. It labels the notes on the keyboard and gives you real-time feedback on what note you're singing.) If you need a tutorial on how to read music, this one seems sufficient for helping you figure out which note you want to find on the keyboard.

Rehearsal Summary - 02/11/25

Only three of us could make it out this week but we had a great time! Since the moon was (mostly) full, we worked on our two main moon pieces, "Moon, Sister Moon" and "Full Moonlight Dance". We started working with the versions for which we have music and TPC recordings but we also played around with other versions. We enjoy the version of "Moon, Sister Moon" by Moving Breath because it's a bit more fast-paced and makes you want to move your body. (Though I still love the reverence of the slower version.) We went through several recordings of "Full Moonlight Dance". We started with the Libana recording because we've used it in the past. Then we tried a few other versions that we didn't care for. Finally, we found a recording by Karen Beth that I absolutely fell in love with! In fact, I replaced the Libana recording with Karen Beth's on the TPC Spotify playlist! We closed out the night with some of our favorite classics, "Cauldron of Changes" and the version of "We All Come From the Goddess" that includes "Hoof and Horn". On an entirely related note, I've just made a YouTube playlist for TPC! Hopefully that will increase accessibility for folks who don't use Spotify.

Happy Imbolg, friends! Since rehearsal will be on one of the two days that could be considered astronomical Imbolg, I'd like to finally work on the Imbolg piece from our "Chants" set. (Our other Imbolg piece from the "Wheel of the Year" set is a bit more complex and probably won't be something we pick back up any time soon.) I might also bring the lyrics I wrote and see if anyone has an idea for a melody, since I'm a Brigid devotee and don't feel like either of the pieces we have music for really do her justice. Also, good news! In light of recent events, we've expanded the ways we can connect! TPC now has a BlueSky account, as well as a Discord account and server! So now you have another way to keep up with our activities and, when we have to cancel rehearsal for inclement weather or similar, we can still get together to chat on Discord. (You'll see this info repeated in the PS; that's so I don't forget to add it next week because I nearly did this week!)
