Rehearsal Summary - 08/13/24

I wasn't able to attend this week due to parenting things (also why this update is so late), but I received a recording, from one of the five members who was present, of them singing the Mabon Chant a few times. It's a short piece but a lovely tribute to turning one's hands to good works. Unfortunately, I can't upload the file type they sent me but we'll see if we can find a work-around. We had a new person this week! I'm sorry to have missed them but look forward to seeing them at future rehearsals!

If you'd like to review any of our material, the sheet music and recordings are available on our Drive. For the naming conventions of the recordings, see the document in our Drive. If you're trying to practice at home and can't quite discern your note, you can use a keyboard app to plunk out whichever ones you're having trouble with.  (This is by no means an official endorsement, but the app I use is "Voice Training - Learn to Sing" by the developer Learn to Master. It labels the notes on the keyboard and gives you real-time feedback on what note you're singing.) If you need a tutorial on how to read music, this one seems sufficient for helping you figure out which note you want to find on the keyboard.

We didn't receive any donations this time but we did still have some left over from our last donation. which went towards our next rental payment. Thank you so much to all our generous donors, we really appreciate it! If you would like to track our accounting, you can view our donations and expenses spreadsheet and receipts on our Drive.

We can't wait to sing with y'all!

Next Rehearsal – 08/13/24

Our next meeting is next Tuesday!

August 13, 2024 7pm-9pm
Raleigh UU, Peace Hall, Rm. 101
3313 Wade Avenue
Raleigh, NC 27607

One of our members has been teaching us Lakota songs recently, so that's a possible item on the agenda. Alternatively, it's not too early to start learning the Mabon piece! If you'd like to be an overachiever and come prepared, sheet music and recordings for most pieces are available on our Drive. I'm unable to attend this week due to parenting things but I hope everyone has a great time!

We welcome all safe and respectful Pagan and Pagan-adjacent adults of any skill and experience level! We're community-focused rather than performance-focused, so we don't hold auditions and we welcome drop-ins. Because of the music that is best-known and most-available, our starter songs trend a little Wiccan, but we will be seeking to incorporate all kinds of Pagan and Pagan-friendly music. You can help! We welcome recommendations and leads on pertinent music that is in the public domain or is low-royalty.

There are no fees or dues for participating, but we do gratefully welcome any cash donations* to cover the cost of renting our rehearsal space. We will have a receipt book on hand to log all donations and post aggregate info (without personally identifying information) to the blog so everyone can see where their donations are going. *We are not currently a registered 501c, so we don't have financial accounts and I can't speak to whether or not your donation is tax-deductible.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of a contagious illness, especially Covid-19, please defer your attendance until you're feeling well. We'll all be breathing the same air in that meeting room and, while you are absolutely welcome to wear a mask, it isn't exactly conducive to singing.

We will have name/pronoun stickers, sheet music, and folders available at our meetings. The sheet music is also available on our Drive. The only things you need to bring are your voice and the vocal-chord-friendly drink of your choice!

The UU campus has multiple lots, buildings, and doors, so we have a video demonstrating how to get to our rehearsal space from either lot. (Apologies for my winded smoker wheezing!)

We can't wait to sing with y'all on Tuesday!

P.S. In addition to this blog, there are a number of ways to stay updated on our events. We have a mailing list for weekly email reminders and can even send you an Invite directly through Google Calendar. Email us at the address above to be added to both or either of these lists. You can also find us on Facebook at our Page and in our Group, where we share Events and other info. If you'd like to be added to the Invite list for our Facebook Events, please follow our Page or join our Group (otherwise FB won't let me send it to you) and drop us a PM. Here's the FB Event for our August 13 rehearsal.

Rehearsal Summary - 08/06/24

I wasn't able to attend this week due to Covid recovery, but I received a rehearsal summary from one of the three members who was present. They spent the evening learning Lakota songs from our member who was recently at the Sun Dance Ceremony!

If you need a tutorial on how to read music, this one seems sufficient for helping you figure out which note you want to find on the keyboard.

We received an extremely generous donation of $80 recently week, which covered this week's rent and still some to spare for next week! Thank you so much to our generous donor, we really appreciate it! If you would like to track our accounting, you can view our donations and expenses spreadsheet and receipts on our Drive.

Next Rehearsal – 08/06/24

Our next meeting is next Tuesday!

August 6, 2024 7pm-9pm
Raleigh UU, Peace Hall, Rm. 101
3313 Wade Avenue
Raleigh, NC 27607

We've been making progress on "Dark of the Moon" and "Lammas Gift" so both of those are strong contenders for rehearsal. Unfortunately, I'm recovering from Covid (which is why this update is so late), so I won't be able to attend. I don't appear to have transmitted it to anyone at our last rehearsal, so everyone else should be good to go. If you'd like to be an overachiever and come prepared, sheet music and recordings for most pieces are available on our Drive.

We welcome all safe and respectful Pagan and Pagan-adjacent adults of any skill and experience level! Rehearsal Summary - 07/29/24

Only three of us could make it this week but we made solid progress on "Lammas Gift". Last week we learned the melody and the first verse. This week we successfully learned to apply the melody to the rest of the verses. We made a recording with just a couple minor errors. We still need some polishing, but I feel good about our progress!

If you'd like to review any of our material, the sheet music and recordings are available on our Drive. For the naming conventions of the recordings, see the document in our Drive. We received an extremely generous donation of $80 this week! That entirely covers the rent for our next two rehearsals and a but towards one after that! Thank you so much to our generous donor, we really appreciate it! If you would like to track our accounting, you can view our donations and expenses spreadsheet and receipts on our Drive.

P.S. I'm sorry I'm so late with updates. I've been laid low with Covid while my brother was in town visiting for Lughnasadh and could only do the bare minimum. I don't appear to have transmitted it at rehearsal but I'll be sitting out the 8/6 rehearsal while I recover.

Next Rehearsal – 07/30/24

Our next meeting is next Tuesday!

July 30, 2024 7pm-9pm
Raleigh UU, Peace Hall, Rm. 101
3313 Wade Avenue
Raleigh, NC 27607

Next week will certainly see us working on "Lammas Chant" since it will be just two days before Lughnasadh. If you'd like to be an overachiever and come prepared, sheet music and recordings for most pieces are available on our Drive. (Note from El: My brother is coming into town from Boston the day after rehearsal so don't be surprised if I'm late with updates next week.)

Rehearsal Summary - 07/25/24

Only three of us could make it this week but one of our members had just returned from a Sun Dance ceremony in New York and shared with us a song she was taught and received permission to share, so that was pretty special! She also shared her sweetgrass with us! (She's been trained in the appropriate ways to handle sweetgrass and returned with plugs to start in her garden!) After that, we worked on "Lammas Chant". I think we made the right call changing the final note to a harmony because that same member instinctively hit the higher note in the harmony, even though she hadn't been there last week and it wasn't on her sheet music! She also pointed out that there are additional verses on the reverse that we had forgotten existed! We didn't take any recordings this week but we did make progress on putting the other verses to the melody.

If you'd like to review any of our material, the sheet music and recordings are available on our Drive. For the naming conventions of the recordings, see the document in our Drive.
